Computing-

Intent, Implementation and Impact

Intent

At Crook Log we understand that technology is everywhere and it will play a pivotal part in our children’s lives. We want to model and educate our pupils on how to use technology positively and to be responsible online citizens. We want to offer our pupils a broad curriculum encompassing computer science, information technology and digital literacy. We want our pupils to understand that there is always a choice with using technology and as a school we utilise technology to model positive use. We aim to build the confidence in this subject that will allow pupils to effectively demonstrate their learning through creative use of technology. We understand the accessibility opportunities technology can provide for our pupils now and in their future.

We know that computing offers opportunities to develop the skills of resilience, perseverance and teamwork which our pupils can then apply to other areas of their learning. We want our pupils to be fluent with a range of tools to best express their understanding and by Upper Key Stage 2, for children have the independence and confidence to choose the best tool to fulfil the tasks and challenges set by their teachers. Our computing curriculum equips children for life in the digital world, developing their understanding of appropriate online behaviour, copyright issues, being discerning consumers of online information and having a healthy use of technology.

Implementation

Our scheme of work is KAPOW and this is designed to cover three strands of this subject. Computer Science, Information Technology, Digital Literacy

Years 1 and 2 will have a designated Computing/ Digital literacy session every other week either in the ICT suite or using Chromebooks in the Classroom. Children in Years 3 -6 have a lesson each week. Over the course of a term there will be a balance of Computing and IT or Digital Literacy.

Skills are taught in a progressive way and are developed year on year to ensure that attainment targets are met by the end of each key stage. The children develop their computing knowledge and skills by revisiting and building on previous learning.

Lessons incorporate a range of teaching strategies. Lessons are differentiated to support all learners.

Knowledge organisers support the children in building a foundation of factual knowledge by encouraging the recall of key facts and vocabulary. These transfer with the children as they progress through the years from Year 1 to Year 6.  These can be referenced at the beginning of a new topic to remind children of their previous learning.

The Kapow scheme supports the development of staff’s subject knowledge with teacher videos. This enables staff to deliver lessons of a high standard that ensure pupil progression.

Impact

The impact of our scheme of work is constantly monitored through formative and summative assessment opportunities. Unit quizzes are used at the end of a unit to assess progress towards the learning objectives.

The children enjoy their computing and digital literacy and value the curriculum we deliver.

We want our children to leave Crook Log:

equipped with a range of skills that will enable them to succeed in secondary school and be active participants in the ever-increasing digital world. Being able to discuss, reflect and appreciate the impact computing has on their learning, development and well-being.

understanding that the right balance with technology is key to an effective education and a healthy life-style and that technology can be used to showcase their ideas and creativity.

with an awareness of online safety issues and protocols and to deal with any problems in a responsible and appropriate manner.
